ENERMAK’S SUPPORT IN ISTANBUL’S EFFORTS TO COMBAT WATER LOSS AND LEAKAGE
İSTANBUL
Whether we realize it or not, beneath everything we see on the surface lies a vibrant, constantly working infrastructure—an invisible network that keeps all systems and structures functional and usable.
These underground infrastructures primarily consist of clean water pipelines, sewer systems, and electricity, telecom, and gas distribution networks. Operating continuously, they are prone to faults in areas we cannot see from the surface. Such faults can lead to blocked sewage lines, power outages, loss of internet connectivity, and—most critically—water supply interruptions. While we usually become aware of infrastructure failures only when we experience these disruptions, a far greater number of faults occur silently, undetected and unnoticed.
Faults in clean water pipelines are particularly critical, as they cause treated, ready-to-use water to leak into the ground—posing a serious threat to our water resources. Experts frequently warn that, due to factors such as population growth, climate change, and environmental pollution, the world will face major challenges in accessing clean water in the future. While individual efforts to conserve water are an important step toward safeguarding this resource, institutions responsible for water management must also take decisive action—especially in detecting water losses and repairing the faults that cause them.
İSKİ is carrying out a major project to combat water loss and leakage on the European side of Istanbul. Using acoustic leak detection microphones, street-by-street inspections are conducted to identify hidden faults in water pipelines—issues that would otherwise go unnoticed—and repairs are made promptly. Through flow and pressure measurements, combined with hydraulic modeling and integration of central system data, the project aims to monitor Istanbul’s water network step by step. By clearly defining sub-regional boundaries, the initiative seeks to manage and deliver water resources to citizens in the most efficient and effective way possible. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure the optimal use of existing water resources and secure a sustainable future.
As ENERMAK ENERGY, the contractor of this pioneering project of İSKİ in Turkey, we are happy to be a part of such a service for our water assets and our people.
We will continue to share news that brings happiness to our people.
