Cable and Pipe Detection
The CAT4 and Genny4 series are designed to help reduce the risk of personnel and auxiliary damage during excavation by avoiding buried cables and pipes. CAT4 is designed to detect signals - either emanating from natural metallic services or to locate the position of non-conductive services.
CAT4 and Genny4 are designed by Radiodetection to offer the most advanced CAT and Genny system, delivering optimal performance, high levels of safety, enhanced features, and competitive pricing. Other products
Overview of Cable and Pipe Detection Product
- The CAT4 digital platform is highly refined, specifically designed to assist operators, enabling them to locate underground infrastructure with precision. CAT4 Avoidance Mode™ allows operators to control the intended excavation area for Power, Radio, and Genny signals, and enables the detection of infrastructure found in a single scan. It features rapid peak response on a buried conductor and zero-in point, as well as operator aids like the 'water level trace' bargraph.
- The Genny4 Signal Generator provides simultaneous dual-frequency signal output. In addition to the familiar 33kHz for general-purpose locating, Genny4 transmits a second higher frequency signal, including Spurs, designed to facilitate the location of small diameter cables such as telecom and street lighting. For challenging location determinations, the power boost function enhances signal strength and provides deep travel, easily programmable onto dual frequencies.
C.A.T. 4 Series Technical Specifications – Infrastructure Detection Device

- Signal output. In addition to the general-purpose familiar 33 kHz signal for locating, Genny4 transmits a frequency designed to facilitate the location of equipment such as telecom and street lighting, including Spurs. For challenging locates, the Signal Boost function allows Genny4 signals to travel further and deeper, making it easier to program onto dual frequencies.
- The CAT4 Dynamic Overload Protection feature automatically filters out high levels.
- interference, allowing operators to continue working even in electrically noisy environments such as substations and beneath high-voltage cables - and requires no input from the operator.
- Safer Dig
As a safety-critical tool, CAT4 and Genny4 offer a range of features designed to support safe operations and help reduce strike rates. StrikeAlert™ notifies the operator if the equipment detects shallow ground or improper usage habits, while the corrective action SWING™ alert prompts corrective action.
The eC.A.T4™ and gC.A.T4™ models feature key parameter logging every second, on-board data collection to assist in determining training needs.
The GC.A.T4 range not only features a built-in GPS/GNSS receiver that adds positional data to log records, showing how the operator was working, but also where CAT was used. All CAT4 units provide Radiodetection with comprehensive hardware and software assessment using an internet connection equipped with Radiodetection's proprietary eCert™ technology, which can extend the validity of CAT4 for years.
Infrastructure Detection Device may require detailed purchase demand for calibration certificate.
Ease of use and introduction – Infrastructure Detection Device
- CAT4 and Genny4 were first introduced by Radiodetection in the mid-1980s, designed to maintain the familiar CAT operating interface and provide full backward compatibility. For example, all Genny3 accessories are compatible with Genny4.
- Radiodetection provides comprehensive training options for operators, managers, and educators to promote best working practices and supports their management.
- Cable Avoidance Responsible. For more information, please contact your local office or representative.
- Data Collection / Logging
- The on-board memory allows data storage on eC.A.T4 and gC.A.T4 series products for up to a year. This data can be backed up to a PC at any time, providing almost unlimited record-keeping throughout the product's lifespan. The collected data can be analyzed locally or remotely to ensure compliance and determine training needs.

- eCert - Remote calibration verification
eCert offers an innovative calibration option as part of the annual service regimen, allowing remote calibration tests. Through the CAT Manager PC software, eCert CAT4 provides a convenient and comprehensive test with key insertion circuitry, verifying calibration results against the original factory calibration via an internet connection to Radiodetection.
After passing an eCert test, a Radiodetection calibration certificate for CAT4 can be printed or saved. Radiodetection also offers detailed maintenance packages for complete care.
Small Cable Detection
Finding small-diameter cables like telecom twisted pairs has historically been challenging for CATV users due to the need for simultaneous dual-frequency and simple, intuitive methods. CAT4 and Genny4 help users locate these cables, which are prone to spurs, branch-offs, and the common risk of strike during excavation.
Indicator and CALSAFE™ due to service
Annual service and calibration are key to ensuring the safe operation of CAT operators with confidence in their equipment. To support this, eC.A.T4 and gC.A.T4 models provide a countdown warning for a 31-day service startup.
CALSafe - it can be adjusted to automatically deactivate active units beyond the defined calibration interval to comply with individual company policies. The required interval between services can be customized up to one year using CAT Manager software.
SWING warning
Radiodetection CATs are designed to respond extremely quickly to detect small underground signals. Research into underground signal detection has shown that operator ability to discern embedded programs directly affects their detection, influenced by careless operating practices such as excessive or rapid swinging.
Additionally, to mitigate strike risks, models like eC.A.T4 and gC.A.T4 are equipped with sensors to detect misuse and also alert the user with a warning stored in the data log..
Avoidance Mode
Avoidance Mode speeds up the pre-excavation scanning process by searching for radio signals, and the Genny simultaneously transmits signals. The C.A.T4’s Avoidance Mode enables operators to quickly identify buried utilities and trace them across an area, providing comprehensive control responses. It maximizes speed while ensuring safety, helping operators to distinguish between individual signals and utilities effectively.
C.A.T Manager Software
CAT4 locating is supported by the dedicated CAT Manager program. This Windows® PC application allows plant, fleet, and site managers to quickly upgrade CAT4, download usage data4, and perform an eCert test.
The software or export data logs map systems like KML, CSV, or XLS files. To match your preferences, CAT Manager can enable or disable CAT4 features such as depth estimation and warnings.
User-editable fields enable the storage of plant/fleet codes and other details on the unit, simplifying record-keeping and traceability. Available on eC.A.T4 and gC.A.T4 models.
Real Sound
The audio signals emitted by the C.A.T4 are derived for detection purposes. Radio, Power, and Genny signals assist in the straightforward identification of target objects and help differentiate them from nearby signals and background noise. This enables clear distinction between various signals and facilitates effective collaboration.
Genny4 Signal Boost
In addition to the familiar standard power mode, the Signal Boost feature on Genny4 increases the output signal by up to 10 times, enabling operators to locate deep programs and over long distances.
